Solar Power Must Replace Fossil Fuels Soon

The fact that we have punched a hole in the earth’s ozone layer, which is causing global warming, seems to be in the news constantly these days. Our planet was created several billion years ago. Pollution of the kind that they say created that hole has probably only been around about a hundred years. It is sometimes difficult to comprehend that this can have made such a significant impact in such a relatively short time.

Our planet has survived for all those years and I believe it will continue whatever our generation does.

Lots of countries are jumping on the “green” bandwagon and looking for fuels that create cleaner power than the fossil fuel that we rely on at present. But there is a better reason why, in my mind, we should seriously be looking at other forms of energy. The governments do not really discuss this.

Solar Energy Harvesting Using 1 Percent of Current Materials: Scientific American Podcast

Imagine a world where sunlight can be captured to produce electricity anywhere, on any surface. The makers of thin-film flexible solar cells imagine that world too. But a big problem has been the amount of silicon needed to harvest a little sunshine.

Now, researchers [led by Harry A. Atwater] at Caltech say they’ve designed a device* that gets comparable solar absorption while using just one percent of the silicon per unit area that current solar cells need. The work was published in the journal Nature Materials.

The research team tried silicon wire arrays instead of traditional silicon panels. These wires have been shown to do a good job converting sunlight to usable energy on the nanoscale. But the scientists had to create wires a thousand times longer.

Using solar energy to power Australia s economy -

CANBERRA, April 18 (Xinhua) — There is no technical reason why Australia could not use solar energy to power its economy, Chief Executive Officer of Solar Energy Society John Grimes told Xinhua in an exclusive interview.

Earlier, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced funding to build a solar energy system on the site of an existing coal fired power station at Kogan Creek in Queensland. The project will see 104.7 million U.S. dollars spent on the world’s largest integrated solar-coal fired power plant.

Grimes welcomed the move, saying that the Kogan Creek Solar Project is expected to save 35,000 tons of greenhouse gas from entering the atmosphere every year.
